A Benefit for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries' Soundswell Local Music Collection
The HOMEGROWN benefit brought together two stellar local bands to help raise awareness of the the Santa Cruz Public Libraries' Soundswell Local Music Collection on Sunday June 14, 2015.
The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men, Sugar by the Pound, and Special Guest Emcee Kim Luke put on a fantastic show at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center.
The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men and Sugar by the Pound:
The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men are a rootsy rock n’ roll band born and raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Every bit as influential as their early surroundings, songwriters Jamie and Kellen Coffis’ blend of folk, blues, R&B and straight ahead rock are evidence of an upbringing spent listening to all of the right records from Tom Petty, Neil Young, and The Beatles.
“The Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men have developed a sound that has an easy rock vibe that’s actually hip.” – San Francisco Chronicle
Sugar by the Pound came together in the Spring of 2014 and is one of the only all-female bluegrass bands, not only in the area, but for miles around. Their combination of traditional bluegrass music, country-style blues, honky tonk, and classical influences hits home with a wide audience.
“The all-female band—Ali Steele on banjo, Erin Valdivia on guitar, Cristy Aloysi on guitar and mandolin, and Sarah Farrell Mackessy on bass, with all four sharing vocals—bring a contagious, foot-stomping excitement to their shows, and are known to have fans dancing to and even singing along with the classic songs they cover.” – Good Times Santa Cruz
All proceeds from this event benefited the Santa Cruz Public Libraries' SoundSwell Local Music Collection, a growing contemporary and historical local music archive that library cardholders can download for free. Support this project! DONATE
